Louisiana is becoming the platform of the autonomous maritime revolution.
Across South Louisiana, from the bayous of St. Mary Parish to the shipyards of Iberia Parish, a new kind of industrial transformation is underway. One that brings together advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and national defense priorities into a single, rapidly scaling ecosystem.
Louisiana is becoming the platform of the autonomous maritime revolution. Across South Louisiana, from the bayous of St. Mary Parish to the shipyards of Iberia Parish, a new kind of industrial transformation is underway. One that brings together advanced manufacturing, artificial intelligence, and national defense priorities into a single, rapidly scaling ecosystem.
This is the result of a deliberate strategy to align capital, workforce, and innovation through Louisiana Innovation (LA.IO), positioning the state at the center of America’s next-generation maritime capabilities.
Five companies are leading that transformation: Metal Shark, Saronic Technologies, Huntington Ingalls Industries (HII), Blue Water Autonomy, and Gulf Coast Tactical. Together, they represent billions of dollars in investment, thousands of high-wage jobs, and a fundamental redefinition of modern shipbuilding in the age of autonomy.
Metal Shark, long headquartered in Jeanerette, reflects the evolution of Louisiana’s maritime industry. With more than 2,000 vessels delivered worldwide, including over 500 to the U.S. Navy, the company has expanded into unmanned systems over the past decade. Its debut of a high-speed unmanned surface vessel, already drawing international demand, underscores that shift. With its acquisition by Magnet Defense, Metal Shark now combines AI-enabled robotics with industrial-scale shipbuilding capacity.
If Metal Shark represents evolution, Saronic Technologies represents acceleration.
After raising $600 million, Saronic established operations in Franklin, Louisiana, with a singular goal: to produce autonomous surface vessels faster and at greater scale than ever before. The company completed its first vessel hull in approximately nine months – a remarkable timeline in modern U.S. shipbuilding – and is now investing $300 million to expand its production capacity by more than 300,000 square feet. That expansion is expected to create 1,500 direct jobs with wages well above the regional average. The U.S. Navy has already validated this model, awarding Saronic a $392 million contract for its autonomous vessel platform.
At the same time, Huntington Ingalls Industries – the largest military shipbuilder in the United States – is building its autonomous future in Louisiana. Its ROMULUS unmanned surface vessel prototype is under active construction at Breaux Brothers Enterprises in Loreauville, with sea trials scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2026. The program integrates advanced autonomy software, artificial intelligence from Shield AI, Applied Intuition, and C3 AI, and next-generation manufacturing through HII’s High-Yield Production Robotics (HYPR) initiative, applying robotics and digital engineering to scale production in ways that define the future of defense manufacturing.
Blue Water Autonomy is a startup founded in 2024 by Navy veterans with a clear mission: design and build unmanned surface vessels en masse. After raising $61 million in Series A funding and recruiting senior leadership from General Dynamics and Serco, the company moved quickly to establish Louisiana production roots by partnering with Conrad Shipyard, a Gulf Coast builder with more than 75 years of experience across commercial and military shipbuilding. The partnership positions Blue Water to deliver autonomous vessels rapidly while drawing on Conrad’s proven manufacturing depth across five Gulf Coast facilities.
Rounding out the field is Gulf Coast Tactical, a New Iberia-based defense manufacturer with more than 400 vessels delivered to customers in 50 countries. The company brings a proprietary RS1.1 Autonomy Stack – a platform-agnostic system configurable from remote operation to full autonomy – across a range of unmanned vessels capable of carrying up to 40,000 pounds of payload across 2,500 nautical miles. Where others are still proving the concept, Gulf Coast Tactical is already delivering it at scale and exporting it worldwide.
The activity across these five companies signals something larger than individual company investment. A new industrial system is taking shape.
In Louisiana, artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and advanced manufacturing are converging. Software and shipbuilding are no longer separate disciplines, but part of a unified production model.
Through LA.IO, the state is actively building the framework that enables this convergence. By aligning capital, research, workforce development, and industry partnerships, Louisiana is creating the conditions for companies to locate here and scale here. This includes investments in applied AI, support for high-growth companies, and the development of a workforce capable of operating at the intersection of robotics, software, and industrial production.
Across these facilities, traditional roles are evolving into higher-value careers – from welders and fabricators to robotics technicians, autonomous systems operators, and AI-integrated manufacturing specialists.
This is how legacy industries transform: by being upgraded.
The implications extend far beyond Louisiana. As the United States works to rebuild domestic shipbuilding capacity and strengthen its defense industrial base, speed, scalability, and technological integration are becoming decisive advantages.
Louisiana offers all three.
It has the geography, with direct access to the Gulf and global shipping lanes.
It has the infrastructure, anchored by one of the most complex maritime and logistics networks in North America.
It has the workforce, built on generations of experience in energy, shipbuilding, and heavy industry.
